A Rain Lover Official Definition

Now that we have the touchy-feely stuff out of the way let’s get to a big word. Pluviophile. What is a pluviophile, you ask? A pluviophile is someone who loves rain. Pluviophiles find joy and are at peace when it’s raining. In a nutshell, pluviophile is the word given to rain lovers.

It becomes more apparent when you break down this word. The word pluviophile is made up of two words, “pluvial”, a Latin word meaning rain and “phile” which means to love or be fond of, i.e., literally rain lover. We think it’s safe to say that pluviophile is the official definition of rain lover.

Fun Fact: If a pluviophile is someone who loves the rain, what would we call a person who hates it? Is there a name for someone who hates or fears the rain? Yes! Why people love the rain (what rain makes them feel)

Why people love the rain

Now, why does someone who loves rainy days, love rainy days? What does the rain make them feel? Well let’s see, rain is something that can evoke powerful emotions in all of us.

If we look at it from an evolutionary perspective, rain meant fertility and life. It meant that our food would grow, flowers would bloom, and we’d get fresh water to drink. Perhaps that has an impact on our perception of rain.

Another factor could be that as early humans, we’d have no option but to spend time under shelter with each other when it rained. This forced interaction could have blossomed into romance or quality time with our family and loved ones.

Coming back to our own individual lives, we’re probably hit with core memories of playing in the rain as kids. Back when we were carefree and completely in the moment.

Nostalgia and our experiences with rain throughout our lives likely have big roles to play in why we are so in love with rain.

A scientific reason behind us liking the sound of the rain is that the constant rhythm of water droplets and the rain calms us down, as opposed to sudden loud sounds, which trigger our threat receptors and put us in fight or flight.

Why People Who Enjoy The Rain Are Happier In Life

People who enjoy rain are generally happier in life. We think this is primarily because of their ability to slow down, connect with their feelings and appreciate these rainy days. The gloomy clouds don’t scare them, they understand that the rain makes it possible for life to prosper.

It offers them the same values in life when things get tough, those times will pass. They also pay greater attention to their surroundings and tend to savor every moment.

I live in the middle east, but I always aim to come to Europe during the transition season to hang out in the rain ☔ Since I remember, I have loved rainy days and found excuses to play outside, jumping through the puddles. As a grown-up, I found out I am a classic Pluviophile ;)
